BACKGROUND:
Mooney Grove Park, known to local residents as Mooney’s Grove, is a 155 acre park located at the south end of the City of Visalia. It is the oldest county park in the state. In 1909, 100 acres of Mooney ranch were purchased by County Board of Supervisors for $15,000 on the condition that it would only be used for park purposes. Another stipulation included that trees could not be cut down unless dead or diseased. The effort to acquire the land was led by John Tuohy, a Tulare resident, who recognized the importance of preserving the natural resources.
Mooney’s Grove offers a wide range of amenities for relaxation, recreation and education. Included are eighteen arbors, seven restrooms, one boathouse, four playgrounds, horseshoe pits, a pond, and creeks. Included with admission to the park is access to the Tulare County Museum which includes the Farm Labor & Agriculture Museum.
